Introduction

On 8 December 1941 the United States declared war on the Empire of Japan and thus entered Second World War. A decisive component of the U.S. and Allied war effort was the use of unrestricted submarine, air and surface war aimed at the Japanese merchant fleet. “Unrestricted: The Campaign to Sink the Japanese Merchant Fleet During World War II” is a digital history project about this facet of the war. The project is centered on the geospatial analysis and presentation of sinking data compiled by the Joint Army-Navy Assessment Committee in 1947. This project makes use of period images, video and textual sources. The original sinking dataset is available for download as a KML, Shapefile, and Comma Separated Values file. The files are located within the "Data" collection under the “Collections” portion of this website.
